Everything you need to know about Champions Cup

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced the schedule, venue, captains, and squads of the upcoming one-day Champions Cup. The five teams will compete for the Trophy naming, Lions, Wolves, Panther, Dolphins, and Stallions.

The tournament will kickstart from 12th September in Faisalabad. This will be the first domestic tournament since the PCB has announced the new strategy for the domestic structure. Many national stars including the central contracted players will participate in this one-day cup and mentors for each team have been announced, also.

The Stallions will be captained by Mohammad Haris who recently led the Pakistan A side as well. Haris was dropped for ODI World Cup 2023 and eventually left out from the T20 World Cup 2024 too but now he has been given captaincy. If anything, Haris can impress the selectors to mark his comeback in the side. He was selected captain by mentor Shoaib Malik. The most surprising fact is the wicket-keeper batter will captain Pakistan’s current white-ball and red-ball captains, Babar Azam and Shan Masood.

After taking back the captaincy of Pakistan national team, Shaheen Shah Afridi will lead the Lions in the upcoming provisional tournament. Afridi also led Lahore Qalandars to two PSL titles back in 2023 and 2024. The side also includes the central-contract bound players, Abdullah Shafique, Imam-ul-Haq, and Aamer Jamal.

Wolves will be led by Mohammad Rizwan, Saud Shakeel will captain the Dolphins, and Panthers will have Shadab Khan as their skipper.

The teams have not been given the cities names perhaps, Lahore for Lions, Stallions for Sialkot, Peshawar for Panthers, Faisalabad for Wolves, and Karachi for Dolphins.

Umar Akmal, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Amir, Azam Khan, Mohammad Abbas, Ahmed Shehzad, Haris Sohail, and Mohammad Ilyas have made them unavailable for the tournament.

Other players undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy include Ahsan Ali, Athar Mahmood, Rizwan Hussain, and Zeeshan Zamir, in addition to Arshad Iqbal, Hasan Ali, Ihsanullah, and Mohammad Wasim Jnr (as stated by the PCB)

Nine domestic contracted players were excluded from the Champions One-Day Cup squads after failing their fitness tests. They are: Ali Shafique, Ali Zaryab, Arif Yaqoob, Danish Aziz, Mohammad Rameez Jnr, Saad Baig, Rameez Aziz, Sharjeel Khan, and Shawaiz Irfan (as stated by the PCB)

The tournament will have playoffs – just like the PSL – instead of the semi-finals and it will conclude on 29th September, eight days before the Pakistan and England Test match series.
