NZ vs SL 1st T20: Match Preview, Where to Watch, & Live Streaming

New Zealand and Sri Lanka will lock horns in the first T20 of the three-match series on 28th December. The match will take place at Bay Oval in New Zealand.

Match Preview:

New Zealand hasn’t been in a great T20 form this year. During the T20 World Cup 2024 in June, they faced a premature exit from the tournament even losing from Afghanistan.

Talking about the recent games, they tied a T20 series against the same opponent.

Nevertheless, the Black Caps will look forward to winning this time as they will be playing in their home conditions, the condition which makes them a force to reckon with.

Glenn Philips will be the key player for New Zealand. His all-around capabilities has always helped the Kiwis to win the game from an unthinkable situation. So, it doesn’t matter if it’s with the bat or bowl, Philips has all the ingredients to turn the tides for his side.

From the bowling perspective, Mitchell Santner will hold the key as his immaculate line and length always keep the batters at bay.

It is imminent to mention that it will be the first assignment for Santner as a captain as well as he was recently appointed the new white-ball captain for the side.

Talking about Sri Lanka, they did not enjoy a great outing in the T20 World Cup either as they could not make it into the Super 8 stage of the tournament.

Recently, they have shown better performances in the format. They tied the series with Black Caps in recent past and won a series against West Indies in October.

The return of Wanindu Hasaranga will only lift up the team as he has been a cornerstone for his side. His ability to contribute with both bowling and batting makes him a vital cog for the team.

Kusal Mendis will be another player that can contribute massively for the island nation. The batter showcased great form in the recent edition of the T10 league and if anything he will look to translate it for the national side as well.

Kamindu Mendis will be another key player for Sri Lanka.

Pitch and weather report:

Looking at the weather forecast, there are expectations of a mix of sunshine and clouds, with temperatures ranging from 13°C to 27°C. And the best part? Only a tiny 4% chance of rain, so we’re all set for a full match.

As for the pitch, Bay Oval is a batsman’s paradise. The track offers good bounce and movement early on, making it perfect for a high-scoring Twenty20 International.

But here’s the thing: as the game wears on, the pitch slows down, giving the bowlers an upper hand. And interestingly, spinners tend to have an edge over fast bowlers on this ground, with better economy rates.

Probably Playing XI:

New Zealand: Tim Robinson, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner (C), Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Mitch Hay (wk), Matt Henry, Nathan Smith, Zak Foulkes

Sri Lanka: Charith Asalanka (c), Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Wanindu Hasaranga, Matheesha Pathirana, Jeffrey Vandersay, Nuwan Thushara, Asitha Fernando, Maheesh Theekshana

Head-to-head record:

A total of 25 games have been played between the said nation. New Zealand is leading the chart having won 14 games while Sri Lanka could only claim victories in 10 game. One game ended in no result.

Prediction:

Given how strong New Zealand is in their home conditions, they are favourite to win the 1st T20 of the series.
